John is a native of Cork, the county he lovingly describes as 'the centre of the universe' and it has been a huge influence on this singer/songwriter. Vocally, Spillane is quite unique with an almost sean nos like element and has been described as having a voice 'full of honesty, commitment and sensitivity'.
His debut solo album 'The Wells of The World' (1997) was described by Hot Press's Oliver Sweeney as, 'not only a striking and individual musical statement, but one of the albums of this or any other year.' His compositions have been described as, "highly original in concept, full of imagery and wonder".
April 1st 2005 saw the release of "Hey Dreamer" on the record label EMI Ireland. John's third solo album went to number 4 in the Irish album charts on week of release and three weeks later it was still in the top ten. A sell out Irish tour followed, ending with a sell out show in Cork's Opera House.
John Spillane has an incredible stage presence, it’s not a large ego type presence - he’s an incredibly humble and self effacing man - but something changes when he walks on stage, and he immediately forms a connection with the audience which allows him to create a wonderfully intimate atmosphere, even in the largest of venues.
John's performances shimmer with the magic realism that permeates many of his songs, as he effortlessly flits between beautiful poetry tinged with melancholy to roguish, irreverent Cork humour. If you are looking for a night of good ‘craic’, a John Spillane show should not be missed.
Spillane is an advocate of the resurgence of the Irish language having released a number of albums almost entirely in Irish. In 2008, John released the album "Irish Songs We Learned At School", which made the Top 10 in the irish charts. In 2009, John released "The Best Of John Spillane - So Far So Good Like" and also the album "More Irish Songs We Learned At School".
